Paintings - Wayne Hammett presents one to Paris Hilton.

In my artistic journey, I find inspiration in the familiar and the forgotten: the iconic, and the often overlooked fragments of our visual culture. I thrive on the alchemy of transformation, using existing materials (magazine ads, album covers, vintage movie stills, etc.) as inspiration for the canvas upon which I blur the boundaries between the past and present, giving birth to something new. I am energized by the creative tension between the known and the novel, the commonplace and the extraordinary.

Drawing inspiration from the world of pop art, vibrant spirit of lowbrow art (pop surrealism), and cultural traditions of folk art, I strive with my paintings to unveil the hidden narratives buried within the ephemeral artifacts that catch my eye. I explore the nostalgia and resonance that these images hold in our collective consciousness – a visual excavation, unearthing the essence of the source material and allowing it to guide my creative process.

Yet, I am not content with mere replication or nostalgia. I seek to disrupt the ordinary by injecting a playful irreverence into my paintings. It is in the act of manipulation that I discover the poetry within these visual relics, inviting viewers to reconsider their initial perceptions and associations, and discover new layers of meaning and emotion. In this dance between homage and reinvention, I find endless fascination and creative energy.

With my paintings, I strive to challenge conventional notions of authorship and authenticity, blurring the lines between creation and curation. I am a conduit, a curator of the collective visual memory, and a creator of alternate narratives. My art is a testament to the endless possibilities that exist within the fusion of the old and the new, the found and the forged – the idea that creativity knows no boundaries, and that even the most seemingly mundane source material can be a wellspring of innovation.

Ultimately, my goal with all my paintings is to engage viewers in a dance of discovery, where the familiar becomes unfamiliar, and the forgotten is reignited. I invite you to explore my portfolio and embark on this journey of rediscovery and reinvention with me, to discover the stories that reside within the art of reinterpretation.
